The Untold Story About Orica’s Leaks

Sydney Morning Herald2011-11-12:                      THE Orica chemical plant in Newcastle, shut down after a 900-kilogram ammonia leak last week, had already leaked 69,000 kilograms of the chemical in uncontrolled releases over the past year. National pollution records reveal the extent of the so-called ”fugitive” emissions. But they also show the environmental watchdog has allowed the company another 481,000 kilograms of ”controlled” releases of ammonia over 12 months. It means an average 10,000 kilograms of ammonia each week are released from the Kooragang Island plant.
